Tissue Flashcards
(46 cards)
What is the abdominopelvic cavity?
Body cavity that encompasses the abdominal and pelvic cavities. The abdominal cavity contains the stomach, intestines, spleen, liver and other associated digestive organs. The pelvic cavity contains the bladder and some reproductive organs.
What is the apical surface?
Surface of body organ that faces outwards, towards the surface.
What does avascular mean?
Structure that does not contain blood vessels.
What is the basal surface?
Surface that forms the base of a body organ.
What is cartilage?
Strong form of connective tissue that contains a dense network of collagen and elastic fibres.
What is chyme?
A fluid substance consisting of partially digested food and digestive enzymes, which is found travelling through the digestive tract.
What is connective tissue?
Tissue that binds, reinforces, insulates, protects and supports structures.
What is diffusion?
The movement of particles from areas of high concentration to low concentration.
What are endocrine glands?
Glands that release hormones.
What is epithelial tissue?
Tissue that lines or covers body surfaces.
What are exocrine glands?
Glands that secrete their products externally (i.e. mucus, sweat).
What is the extracellular matrix?
A collection of largely non-living substances that separate the living cells of connective tissue.
What is a gland?
A structure that manufactures a product (e.g. hormones, mucus, sweat).
What are glycoproteins?
Special proteins that contain simple sugar chains. Glycoproteins play an important role in cell-to-cell communication.
What are hormones?
Regulatory chemicals released by endocrine glands for use elsewhere in the body (e.g. thyroxine, insulin).
What does innervated mean?
Stimulated by nerve cells.
What is interstitial fluid?
The fluid that bathes cells.
What is keratin?
A special tough fibrous protein found in skin.
What are lymph nodes?
Small lymphatic structures that filter lymphatic fluid.
What are macrophages?
White blood cells that specialise in the destruction and consumption of invading pathogens.
What is a membrane?
A sheet of tissue that covers or lines an area of the body.
What is mitosis?
The division and replication of cells.
What are neuroglia?
Cells of the nervous system that support and nourish neurones.
What is a neurone?
A nerve fibre.
