Tissues and Cell Structures Flashcards
(12 cards)
Simple Pit
Found in primary cell wall. Channels for the transport of water and nutrients between cells. Opens internally to the lumen of the cells. Can also be called the primary pit field. Lack borders.
Bordered Pit
Found in secondary cell wall. Usually found in sclerenchyma. Stronger and more complex than simple pit
Simple Tissues
Parenchyma
Collenchyma
Sclerenchyma
Complex Tissues
A mix of any of these three types of simple tissues
Dermal Tissue system: epidermis/epiderm
Vascular Tissue system: xylem/phloem
Parenchyma
only have primary walls that stay thin
the most common type of cell tissue, found in all soft parts of plants: soft leaves, petals, fruits, seeds composed mostly parenchyma
are alive at maturity
Chlorenchmya
Subtype of parenchyma. parenchyma cells involved in photosynthesis, contain chloroplasts. Thin walls allow light/CO2 to pass thru to chloroplasts
Glandular cells
Subtype of parenchyma. secrete nectar, fragrance, mucilage, resins. Higher amounts of dictyosomes and endoplasmic reticulum. For protection.
Transfer cells
Subtype of parenchyma. mediate short distance transport by means of large plasma membranes.
Collenchyma
Primary cell walls only
Alternating layers of pectin and cellulose, thicker at corners
Provide support while leaves and stems are expanding
Usually only seen on young petioles and stems
Works together with parenchyma, combining water pressure and resistance
Sclerenchyma
Found in secondary walls, derived from parenchyma cells that have stopped growing
Elastic yet retain shape
Dead at maturity
Mechanical sclerenchyma
usually have simple pits
- Fibers
- Sclereids
Conducting sclerenchmya
usually have bordered pits
- Tracheids
- Vessels
