Topic 1: Unit-1 Flashcards
THE EARTH AS A SYSTEM -- Spheres of the earth (14 cards)
What is a system?
A system is something that is made up of many different parts that work together.
The 4 spheres that interact to sustain life?
- The Lithosphere
- The Hydrosphere
- The Atmosphere
- The Biosphere
What is the Lithosphere?
Solid, rocky layer covering the earth
4 Reasons as to why soil is essential for living organisms?
- To anchor plants
- Habitats for animals
- Source of nutrients for crops
- Rich source of minerals e.g coal; iron; gold
What does the Lithosphere include?
Rocks, soil and minerals
What is the Hydrosphere?
Combined masses of water in all its forms on earth including liquid, gas or solid
What does the Hydrosphere include?
Water in oceans, rivers, lakes, water vapour, ice
Division of water on Earth?
97% = salt water > 3% = fresh water - 2% of which is frozen
Use of water on earth?
helps to maintain constant temperatures on the earth
What is the Atmosphere?
Layers of various gases surrounding our planet
Division of air on Earth?
79% nitrogen; 21% oxygen; +- 4% CO2 & others
4 reasons why the atmosphere is vital for living organisms?
- Provides oxygen for respiration
- Maintains constant temperatures
- Traps heat from the sun to sustain life
- Ozone layer prevents damage from UV rays
What is the Biosphere?
Composed of all living organisms
What does the Biosphere include?
plants, animals, microorganisms and their interactions with the other spheres
