Topic 2: Unit-1 Flashcards
LITHOSPHERE -- Lithosphere (13 cards)
The 4 concentric layers of the earth?
- Crust
- Mantle
- Outer Core
- Inner Core
4 Points for Crust layer
- Outermost layer of the earth
- Thin shell of solid rock (5-50km thick)
- Consists of tectonic plates
- Exposed surface is weathered to form soil
5 Points for Mantle layer
- Layer under crust
- Thickest layer (2900 km thick)
- Lower mantle - very hot with magma; can flow slowly and form lava when it comes to the surface (volcanic eruption)
- Upper mantle - cooler with solid rock
- upper mantle is in contact with crust which forms part of lithosphere
3 Points for Outer Core layer
- liquid layer of earth surrounding Inner Core
- 2250 km thick
- molten metallic rock made of nickel & iron
Structure of the Lithosphere
5-70km thick with 2 layers
* Crust - thin layer of rock including soil
- soil formed from weathering of the crust
- composition: rocky particles mixed with organic and inorganic materials
* Upper Solid Mantle
Inorganic Materials
Include minerals, water and gases that occur naturally
4 Points for Inner Core layer
- Innermost solid core
- solid metal (2440 km thick)
- Very high temperatures & Pressure
- Consists of iron
examples of minerals (valuable resources)
Copper; Diamond; Platinum
Organic Materials
Include compounds containing carbon from living organisms
Minerals in the crust of the Lithosphere
The lithosphere is made of solid and inorganic compounds called minerals
A mineral
is a naturally occuring material and not produced by living organisms
Metals
elements or alloys that are shiny, malleable, hard substances; they conduct heat and electricity; they form crystals when solid and naturally occur in minerals
3 Rock types
- Igneous rock
- Sedimentary rock
- Metamorphic rock
