3
Q

Troposphere air density?

A

It has the greatest density as the air particles are very close together

Q

Why is the troposphere important?

A

It contains most of the air we breathe (water vapour), clouds, and weather systems, making it vital for life on Earth.

3
Q

What happens to air density and atmospheric pressure in the troposphere?

A

Both air density and pressure decrease as you go up in the troposphere because there are fewer air molecules at higher altitudes.

Q

What is the tropopause?

A

The boundary between the troposphere and the stratosphere, where the temperature stops decreasing and remains constant.

Q

How does temperature change in the troposphere?

A

Temperature decreases with altitude at an average rate of 6.5°C per km as you go higher.

Q

Weather patterns form in this layer:

A
  • more direct sunlight at the equator creates a warmer atmosphere
  • air warmed at the equator rises to higher altitudes
  • warm air at high altitudes moves towards the colder N/S poles where it cools
  • cooled air sinks at the poles towards the earth’s surface where it gradually warms as it moves back towards the equator
