TOPIC 2 CHEM WKST Flashcards
(11 cards)
What are 4 major elements found in the human body?
Carbon
Hydrogen
Oxygen
Nitrogen
Describe 3 types of subatomic particles of an atom and their charge.
Protons- found in the nucleus w/ a positive charge
Neutrons-found in nucleus with no electrical charge
Electrons-found orbiting the nucleus with a negative charge
Describe the difference b/w atomic weight and atomic#
Atomic # it’s the number of protons in the nucleus
Atomic weight is the number of protons and neutrons
Ionic vs. Covalent bonds
Ionic bonds form by a single electron and are weak
Covalent bonds formed by shearing of pairs of electrons and and have a strong bond
What is the difference b/w Organic and Inorganic molecules
Inorganic are non carbon containing
Organic molecules are carbon containing
If a molecule has an atomic # of 9 and an atomic weight of 39 how many protons and neutrons does the molecule have ?
9 protons and 30 neutrons
If an atom has gained an electron, what is this called
Ion
If a chemical reaction stores or takes in energy, what type of reaction is this called?
Anabolic reaction
What molecule is the primary source of energy for the body?
ATP
If a person has an arterial pH is 7.30,what has happened to their pH? What does this mean for the number of H+ ions?
Slightly acidic, ions have increased
If a protein is used to increase the speed of a chemical reaction, what do we call this protein?
Enzyme or catalyst
