Topic 2 evolution Flashcards
(14 cards)
explain the conditions required for natural selection
More organisms are born than can survive.
Organisms vary in their characteristics, even within a species.
Variation is inherited.
Differences in reproduction and survival are due to variation among organisms.
what does the little finger represent
population can shrink
what does the ring finger represent
mating can make a new population (non-random mating)
middle finger
mutation can increase new gene frequency
pointer finger
movement into/out of an area can +/- frequency gene flow
adaptational
“survival of the fittest” thumbs up “ lack survival” thumbs down
micro evolution
small scale effects few genes in population shorter time leads to macro evolution
macro evolution
“speciation” long scale changes over elevated time resulting new species
What is natural selection
a process by which organisms in nature with genic variations most suited to their local environment survive and leave more offspring
what are the conditions required for natural selection
- genetic variation
- competition
- adaption
- survival of fittest
genetic variation
allows for a trait in an entire population to evolve, but not, individually
competition
species will overproduce which leads to competition of recourses
- produce more offspring than can survive
adaptions
organisms will survive its environment and pass its good advantageous traits
- adaptions+mutations
survival of fittest
the good/ adventageous traits will have greater population overtime
enough generations with the good tait, and a new species evolves
