  • serving size (not suggested quantity, just used for comparisons)
  • calories per serving size
  • 12 core ingredients
    manufacturers can also add vitamins on the NFT

HOW WOULD YOU USE THE CFT TO MAKE BETTER FOOD CHOICES?

A
  • does the serving size compare to what you usually eat in one sitting?
  • choose items with higher fiber, and other minerals (k, Ca, Fe)
  • look for lower Na, fat and cholesterol
  • % daily value tells you if there is alot or a little of a nutrient

WHAT FOODS HAVE A NFT? WHICH ONES DON’T?

A

almost all prepackaged foods contain a NFT, exceptions include
- fresh fruits and veggies
- raw meat, poultry, seafood
- food prepared or processed at the store (bakery)
- foods that contain few nutrients (ex. coffee beans)
- alcoholic drinks

  • ingredients are listed in descending order by weight
  • must read the ingredients list to dertermine if food contains an allergen

recent updates

free= none of the nutrient
low= small amount (ex. low fat)
reduced= atleast 25% less of the nutrient in a similar product
light= can be used in foods meant to reduce calories or fat or light in flavour/texture

A

a claim insinuating that there is a relation between food consumption and health.

WHAT ARE DISEASE REDUCTION CLAIMS

A

links a food to a reduced risk of a condition or disease known to be related to diet.
- health risk: osteoporosis
- nutrient: calcium
- claim: a healthy diet with adequate calcium and Vitamin D, and regular physical activity, help to achieve strong bones and may reduce the risk of osteoporosis. Brand X is an excellent source of calcium.
