Topic 3 - Biodiversity Of Plants Flashcards
(15 cards)
What feature separated the terrestrial plants from the ancestral aquatic algae?
Conducting and support tissue, waterproofing and adapted to reproducing on land
Which feature does not exist in flowering plants
Vascular tissue
In what way do the sperm of mosses differ from those of the spermatophytes?
Moss the sperm have to swim to the egg
The spermatophytes the sperm is carried directly to the egg no need for water
What is the reason for different structures in the sperm?
The sperm for mosses need to swim therefor it has flagella
Why do gymnosperms produce more pollen?
Not all the pollen gets to the eggs so to ensure that there is enough to go around
How have the spermatophytes achieved total independence from water for reproduction?
Plant well protected from water loss and the pollen tube
Explain the terms sexual and asexual
Sexual - fusion of gametes from male and female parents
Asexual - reproduction involving only one individual
Why do most higher forms of organisms use sexual reproduction?
Genetic variation
Doesn’t pass on parasites and disease
What is hermaphrodite?
Organism that has both male and female reproductive organs
Describe pollination
Pollen gets transferred from stamens by wind or vectors to the stigma of another plant
Why are wind pollinated flowers anthers large?
As a large amount of pollen needs to be produced
What is the best insect pollinator?
Honey bee
Why are bird pollinated flowers ovules protected?
To prevent damage from the birds beak
Name the 3 parts of a seed
Testa - seed coat
Cotyledon - food supply
Embryo - immature plant
When do seeds germinate?
When in favourable conditions only. Can survive long time before germinating
