How do teachers label ethnic minorities?
Teachers often label black and Asian students as being far from the ideal pupil, and so will give them labels like disruptive for the black pupils and passive for the Asian pupils.
What did Gillborn and Youdell find about teachers discipline towards black pupils?
They found that teachers are quicker to discipline Black pupils - this is a result of teachers ‘racialized expectations’ - they expect black pupils to be more misbehaved and often misinterpreted their behaviour as a challenge to authority.
How are black pupils streamed?
They are often streamed lower due to the negative stereotypes placed upon them- this can lead to self fulfilling prophecy and under achievement
What are the 3 different pupil identities according to Archer?
- Ideal pupil: a white middle class, masculinised identity with a normal sexuality.
- Demonised pupil: Asian ‘deserving poor’, feminised identity, either asexual or with an oppressed identity.
- Demonised pupil: Black or white working class, hypersexualised identity, they are unintelligent, peer led, culturally deprived and an underachiever.
What did Archer find about Chinese pupils?
Chinese pupils were seen to have achieved success in the wrong way - through hard work conformism, not natural ability.
How does marketisation link to institutional racism?
It allows negative stereotypes to influence school admissions.
What did Moore and Davenport find about marketisation?
The selection procedures can often lead to ethnic segregation with minority groups failing to get into better secondary schools and favouring white pupils.
What is an ethnocentric curriculum and how is the education system it?
A curriculum that reflects the culture of one ethnic group (usually the dominant ethnic group).
The national curriculum in the UK is specifically British which ignores non-European languages, literature, and music.
