What is Hydraulic Action
When the force of water causes cracks in the riverbank.
The water compresses air in the cracks causing pressure to build up
The pressure is released causing the rock to break apart
What is Abrasion
When rocks and pebbles carried by the river scrape and grind along the riverbed wearing it away
What is Attrition
When rock and pebbles bump into each other as they’re transported along the river. Over time they break into smaller smoother pieces.
What is Solution
When rocks are dissolved by acids in the water
What is Traction
when giant rocks or boulders are rolled along the riverbed
What is Saltation
When small stones or pebbles bounce along the bottom of the riverbed
What is Suspension
Tiny particles like silt and clay are carried along in the water making it look muddy
