Topic 4.4 Genetic Diversity + Evolution Flashcards
(5 cards)
1
Q
What is genetic diversity?
A
The total number of different alleles of a gene in a population
2
Q
Why is genetic diversity beneficial?
A
It increases chance of survival through the process of natural selection if environment changes
3
Q
What increases genetic diversity?
A
Mutations form new alleles
Migration of individuals from different populations
4
Q
What is allele frequency?
A
The number of times an allele occurs within the gene pool. This changes over time due to natural selection
5
Q
Describe natural selection
A
- New alleles arise through mutation
- The mutation may be beneficial to survive in a certain environment
- Species overproduce offspring which leads to competition for resources
- If the new allele increases the chance of survival and reproduction, this beneficial allele will be passed on to the offspring (reproductive success)
- The allele frequency will increase in the population with each successive generation
- Over time, this leads to evolution
