Flashcards in Topic 7 Deck (19):
1

What is Negative feedback?

Negative feedback ensures that, in any control system, changes are reversed and returned back to the set level.

2

Where is TRH released from?

Hypothalamus

3

What does TRH do?

It stimulates the pituitary gland to produce TSH.

4

What does TSH do?

Stimulates the thyroid gland to release thyroxine.

5

What is stage 1 in the menstrual cycle?

The lining of the uterus breaks down.

6

What is stage 2 in the menstrual cycle?

The uterus lining is repaired, from day 4 to 14.

7

What is stage 3 of the menstrual cycle?

An egg develops and is released from the ovary.

8

What is stage 4 of the menstrual cycle?

The lining is maintained for about 14 days, until day 28. If no egg has landed on the wall by day 28? The lining breaks down again and the cycle starts over.

9

In what order are the menstrual hormones released?

FSH, Oestrogen, LH, Progesterone.

10

What does Oestrogen do?

Causes the lining of the uterus to thicken and grow, and stimulates release of LH.

11

What does LH do?

Stimulates ovulation/release of egg, and stimulates remains of follicle to develop into a structure called a corpus luteum. This secretes progesterone

12

What happens to the level of progesterone if a woman becomes pregnant?

It stays high to maintain the uterus lining.

13

What is homeostasis?

Maintaining the right conditions inside your body.

14

What hormone is added when the blood glucose conc is too high?

Insulin

15

What hormone is released when the blood glucose level is to low?

Glucagon

16

What is type 1 diabetes caused by?

Lack of Insulin

17

What is type 2 diabetes caused by?

Resistance to Insulin

18

What structure controls thermoregulation?

Hypothalamus

19

What are the nephrons, and how do they work?

Filtration units in the kidneys. The liquid part of the blood is forced out of the glomerulus and into the Bowman’s Capsule. Bigger molecules cant get though. As the liquid flows along the nephron, useful substances are absorbed. Whatever isn’t absorbed is excreted.
