Topic 8 Flashcards
(11 cards)
what is fractional distillation
separating crude oil into useful fractions by their boiling points
how does fractional distillation separate crude oil into fractions
-oil heated up until most of it is gas
-gasses enter fractioning column
-liquid but drained off at bottom(bitumen)
longer hydrocarbons have
higher boiling points
fractioning column
Good People Keep Darren Fed Badly
Gasses
Petrol
Kerosene
Diesel oil
Fuel oil
Bitumen
Difference between short and long chain hydrocarbons
flammability-short chain easy to ignite bc low boiling points. normally gass
-long chain higher boling points so harder to ignite.normally liquid
viscosity=how easy substance flows
-long hydrocarbons have high vis bc there thick
-short hydrocarbons have low vis much runnier
stronger force between hydrocarbons=harder to flow
homologous series
-compounds with same functional group
-similar chemical properties
what are the products of incomplete combustion
-less oxygen than carbon dioxide
-h20,co2,co,c
how does methane contribute to greenhouse effect
-act as balnket insulating the earth
-slowing the rate at which heat leaves the planet
-asorb and reflect thermal radiation
gass test of oxygen
-put glowing splint in test tube wigh gas in
-if theres oxygen splint will relight
gas test for hydrogen
-put lighted splint in gas filled testube
-if theres hydrogen there will be a squeeky pop
gas test for carbon dioxide
-bubble gass through limewater
-if theres carbon dioxide limewater will turn cloudy milky colour
