The idea of a play within a play
Farce comedy
Comedy that seeks to entertain an audience through highly exaggerated situations
Jealousy
Important in the plot as it is a strong reason for why Charles is murdered- Cecil states that they had a tempestuous relationship due to the jealousy of one another
Jealousy also within the actor’s motivations- Sandra and Annie fighting over the role of Florence
Opening scene- Chris- posture
Stiff, upright posture as he enters the stage
Opening Scene- Chris- gait
Slow pace with small gait to centre stage

Suggests he is nervous about the performance- his drama society are known for things going wrong

Large awkward smile, as if trying to hide his true emotions

In a blackout to take up his position as the dead body on the chaise longue- the lights come on while he is walking to his position

when the lights come on he crouches down with a hunched over posture

He uses hand gestures to cover his face as if he were hiding, which indicates to the audience that something has gone wrong again

Jonathan has heavy breathing while lying on the chaise longue so as to show an amateur production

Pace varies when delivering lines to either show rushing or uncertainty.
Often mispronounces words and has to correct himself

High intensity white wash to show the working stage lights
Trevor addressing the audience- house lights remain on
Trevor returns to the box and there is a blackout
High intensity spotlight to light Chris, but head is cut off from the neck down

Amber wash indicating to the audience they are not watching the play within a play
Red wash- symbolises death and blood during ‘sir i think he’s dead’ but used for comedic effect

Dennis uses the elevator for the first time- shows movement

Door is stuck- no one can enter or exit
Door handle doesn’t work during Florence’s entrance

Pre-recorded audience announcement reminds of amateur production
He’s been murdered- dramatic music spike to create a comedic tense mood and atmosphere
Trevor forgets to turn off the dramatic music in one go though, and it just continues to play
