Name 3 reasons why Businesses train their workers
Any of the following:
• Improve workers’ technical and personal skills
• Ensure health and safety in the workplace

What are the Benefits of Training?
• Improved worker productivity
• Improved customer service
• Prevents skill shortages amongst staff

Define On the Job training
Learning new skills while doing a job : working alongside experienced staff.
Define Off the Job Training
Training conducted away from the normal workplace. This could be at a training centre or a college.
Define Induction Training
Training that provides an introduction to a new company.
What are the advantages of On the Job training?
• Employees still learn new skills whilst performing their duties
• Financial costs (cheaper than hiring trainers)
• Training is directly related to the actual job
What are the advantages of Off the Job training?
• Less distractions whilst the employees are training
• Employees are more motivated (company is investing in them)
• Training can be provided by expert trainers
What is an Apprenticeship?
A paid job where the employee learns and gains valuable experience.
What are the costs of Apprenticeships?
• Require high degree of supervision, time consuming for experienced staff
• Apprentices can make mistakes and damage company’s reputation
• Company has to pay their wage
• No guarantee of job security after completion
What are the benefits of Apprenticeships?
• Professional qualifications are gained
• Training is specific to firm’s needs and job role
• Less costly as training occurs whilst working
What is Abraham Maslow’s ‘Hierarchy of Needs’ ?
• Shows what an employee/person desires in life
• Decreasing number of people achieve satisfaction in all categories
(Top to bottom= High to Low)
1) Self-fulfilment needs (eg. Realisation of a person’s potential)
2) Ego/esteem needs (eg. Fringe benefits: Extra perks)
3) Social/love needs (eg. Family)
4) Safety/security needs (eg. Pension)
5) Physiological needs (eg. Working conditions)

What does being paid by commission mean?
Earning depends on the value of goods and services they sell (usually sales workers)
What are Bonus payments?
An extra payment (usually at the end of the year) based on the performance of the individual or a group reaching a target.
How are workers paid by Profit Share?
They’re given a share of the company’s overall success.
What are Fringe benefits?
Perks that would cost the company less than the individual (eg. Healthcare, Company cars)
What does being paid a salary mean?
Workers are given 1/12 of their annual earnings each month.
What is a wage?
A method of pay that relies on the number of hours worked + overtime paid (usually weekly).
What does being paid by a Time Rate mean?
Having your pay calculated by the number of hours you work.
What does being paid at a Piece rate mean?
Where the individual is paid according to the number of items completed (eg. Assembly workers).
What is Overtime?
Where workers are paid at time and a half or double time to encourage them to work beyond above their contracted hours.
What negative effects can methods of pay have on motivation?
Time Rate: No recognition of quality
Piece Rate: Rushed work is of poor quality (higher cost over time)
Salary: No incentive to work hard
Profit Share: Do all workers deserve it?, can be frustrating
Fringe Benefits: Taxes can cancel out benefits (eg. Car insurance taxes)

What is Job Enrichment?
Giving the worker more responsibility: often more training without promotion.
