transcription factors Flashcards
(13 cards)
Where are transcription factors found?
In the cytoplasm
What type of molecule are transcription factors?
Proteins
What do transcription factors attach to?
Promotor regions close to the target region it affects
How do transcription factors bind?
They are complimentary to a particular sequence of nucleotides
How do transcription factors work?
By promoting or blocking the recruitment of RNA polymerase
How can oestrogen enter the cell?
It is lipid soluble as it is a steroid hormone
What does oestrogen bind to in the cell?
Specifically to a receptor protein that is part of a transcription factor
What does this allow the transcription factor to do?
Enter the nucleus
What does the binding of oestrogen do to the shape of the transcription factor?
Alters the tertiary structure so it can bind to the promotor sequence
What does this allow for RNA polymerase?
To attach to the gene and catalyse the transcription of the gene
What can oestrogen increase the expression of?
Genes associated with cell division
Why can this lead to breast cancer?
If there is a high blood concentration it can increase the risk of uncontrollable cell division
What is the drug that prevents oestrogen from binding?
Tamoxifen converted to endoxifen
