11
Q

what is galvanisation

A

a form of sacrificial protection where metal is coated with a more reacting metal so that the zinc will corrode instead of the iron

18
Q

what are some uses of steal

A

buildings
bridges
cars

19
Q

what metals make up magnalium

A

aluminium
magnesium

20
Q

what are some porperties of magnalium

A

low density

21
Q

what are some uses of magnalium

A

car and aeroplane parts

22
Q

what is jewellery gold made up

A

gold
copper

23
Q

what are some typical properties of jewellery gold

A

attractive
resistant to corrosion

24
Q

what is the use of jewellery gold

A

jewellery

25
Q

what is brass made out of

A

copper and zinc

26
Q

what are some typical properties of brass

A

hard, resistant to corrosion, good conductor

27
Q

what are 2 uses of brass

A

electrical plugs, coins

28
Q

explain why brass is stronger than copper

A

in pure copper layers of atoms can slide over each other easily as all the atoms are the same size, however when zinc atoms are added to make brass. the zinc atoms disrupt the layer making it more difficult for atoms to slide over each other
