Transport in animals B9 Flashcards
(9 cards)
1
Q
Artery
A
Moves away from the heart
2
Q
Vein
A
Moves towards the heart
3
Q
Capillary
A
Where artery and vein meet (tiny vessels allows diffusion)
4
Q
2 advantages of the couble circulatory system:
A
- more pressure by the heart to ensure the bllod reaches the body tissues
- active organs (brain, muslces) need more oxygen delivered quickly and efficiently
DOUBLE IS MORE EFFECTIVE THAN SINGLE
5
Q
what happens when you exercise? (5)
A
- heart rate increases
- sweating (dehydration, release salt and water through pores)
- tiredness/dizziness
- body temp increases
- skin turns red
6
Q
Factors leading to coronary heart disease (6)
A
- weight/diet
- genes
- age (blood vessels weaken with age)
- gender
- stress
- smoking (or other substance abuse)
7
Q
White blood cells specific mechanism (B9)
A
antibodies or phagocytocis:
antibodies (made by lymphocyte) mark the foreign material by attaching to it, phagocyte engulfs and destroys the pathogen
Lymphocite and phagocyte are btoh types of white blood cells
8
Q
Platelets function
A
Important for the formation of blood clots and important in injury
9
Q
Plasma (4)
A
- rest of the blood that contains everything else
- mostly water
- substances dissolved in it: ions, soluable nutrient, hormones, CO2
- transport of red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets
