what is trepanning
cutting a small hole in the skull to relieve pressure which caused headeches

he used chloroform for anaesthetic as before surgery was dangerous and painful and there was no way in relieving it
why was there opposition to using chloroform
it was untested and side effects were unknown, the first death using it scared surgeons as they couldn’t get the right dose

he had seen carbolic spray to treat sewage, after experiments he found that by spraying it over a wound during surgery it limited infection. this the followed a bandage
why did some doctors oppose carbolic spray
they thought it slowed them down and that it was expensive and it smelt bad
what happened after carbolic spray was accepted
operating theatres and hospitals were cleaned and instruments were steam sterilised. sterilised gloves were also used
