Triglyceride….. AKA?
It is the official name for a lipid.
What does a triglyceride look like?

What is it made of?
1 glycerol molecule, and 3 fatty acids, linked by ester bonds.
IT IS NOT MADE OF MONOMERS
Why do we need triglycerides?
Essential to our diet.
Provide insulation for body, and energy for movement.
They build plasma membranes.
How are they formed?
By condensation reactions.
Saturated fatty acids and unsaturated….
Fats that are solid at RT contain saturated fatty acids.
Fats that are liquid at RT contain unsaturated fatty acids.
Properties of glycerol?
It is soluble in water when on its own.
It allows the polar nature of water to react with it.
(Fatty acids are also soluble in water)
Properties of a triglyceride:
Insoluble in water.
