Katrina - Social impacts

A

1,800 people died, 300,00 home destroyed, hundreds and thousands left homeless with 3 million people left without electricity. Main route of new Orleans closed 1-11 bridge collapsed
water polluted with sewage and chemicals with 5 people dead due to this. 18 schools in New Orleans destroyed, 74 damaged effecting education in the long term

A

2300 jobs lost from damaged businesses. Industry disrupted. 30 oil platforms in Glug of Mexico damaged/destroyed. Ports damaged effecting shipping industry, 5300km of forest destroyed in Mississippi - 85mill lost from logging. Total cost of damages was around 300 billion

what was the effective waning system that helped USA -

A

USA has a sophisticated monitoring system to predict where hurricanes will hit.
Aug 26 the National Hurricane centre in Florida issued a hurricane warning in Louisiana and Mississippi and Alabama, it continued its tracking letting the government know where it would hit this helped people prep usa coastal guard positioned helicopters, boats around areas likely effected organise teams and supplies.
emergency shelters put up for people that didn’t evacuate
refrigerated trucks to deal with dead bodies
new Orland’s ordered compulsury evacuation 80% of poeple left.

Responses to hurricane Katrina storm

A

emergency shelters set up, Louisiana superdome sheltered 26,000 people during teh Hurrican. Coastguard, police,fire service and armie recued over 50,000 poeple. Sett up search and rescue teams.
Charities collected over 4 billion donations from the public for the victims.

Irrawaddy delta - hardest hit as only just above sea level 14,000km of land flooded. Sri Lanka also effected heavy rainfall, flooding and landslides.
social = 140,000 people killed, 450,000 houses destroyed. 2.5 mill people left without shelter
4000 schools and 75% of health facilities destroyed. 45% of fresh water sources valuable for local people damaged by saltwater- 70% of people have no access to clean water lots of people suffered from disease by poor sanity and contaminated water e.g diarrhoea

why wasn’t Myanmar prepared for the storm

A

Myanmar no hurricane monitoring system, India system warned government cyclone likely to hit 48h before. Warnings issued via tv and radio, however didn’t say how strong it would be, to evacuate or how to prepare. Government inisaly refuse emergency foreign aid only accepted on 9th of may UN refugee agency gave food and water and charities set up shelter, water purification tablets and first aid kits.
At this time Myanmar ruled by Military- seized and turned away aid, aid workers not aloud in country until 19th of May - more than 2 weeks after disaster which will have increased death toll
