12 month long drought = highly flammable fuel/vegetation
winter of 2015-16 lack if snow - so didn’t melt and keep ground moist
short term causes
high temperatures around 30 degreese
strong shoutherly winds (continental) blowing matterial furthur and adding more oxygen for fuel
know one knows how the fire was started but 39% of wildfires in canada start from lightning strikes
rapid control of fire in forest over the last 20 years prevented small fires burning bush at ground layer so it accumulated allowing conditions for the fire that broke out.
