Tumor Markers Flashcards
(27 cards)
What is AFP used to screen for?
Testicular cancer, Hepatocellular carcinoma, screening for neural tubular defect
When is a high AFP diagnostic?
> 500 level in a high risk patient
What increases AFP?
liver damage like cirrhosis and hepatitis, lysis of tumor cells
What is B-hCG used to monitor and rediagnose?
Testicular cancer, pregnancy
What 3 tests are used to dx testicular cancer?
AFP, B-hCG, LDH
Which test is a prognostic (increase with severity) tool for testicular cancer?
LDH
Which test is a prognostic (increase with severity) tool for CRC?
CEA
What test is a prognostic tool (increases with severity) for Pancreatic or hepatobiliary cancer?
CA 19-9
Which test is sensitive and specific for pancreatic and hepatobiliary cancer?
CA 19-9
Which test can also be elevated with infections, kidney disease or liver disease?
LDH
Which test monitors breast cancer? (Metastasis)
CA 15-3; CA 27-29
which test is a good predictor of prognosis in breast cancer?
BRCA
What test is used to screen high risk women for ovarian cancer?
CA - 125
What can affect levels of CA- 125?
age, fluctuations with menstrual cycle, ethnicity and smoking
What is the screening tool for Prostate cancer in men over 50
PSA
Who is at high risk for prostate cancer?
African americans, genetics, family hx
What increases PSA?
aging (due to the increase in size of the prostate), BPH, prostatitis, UTI, sexual activity
What gives false negatives of PSA?
NSAIDS, tylenol, statins, thiazides, 5- alpha reductase inhibitors
What is serotonin used to determine?
metastatic cancer
What is fairly sensitive and highly specific for carcinoid tumors?
5-HIAA
What is 5-HIAA a byproduct of?
serotonin
What could 5-HiAA be increased due to?
drugs, serotonin rich foods, bananas
What is sensitive for neuroendocrine tumors?
chromogranin A
What proteins are UPEP and SPEP looking for?
Bence jones proteins
