Type of nutrients Flashcards
(6 cards)
Carbohydrates
first type of molecules to be broken down by the digestive tract
main source of energy
Carbohydrate
molecules are made up of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen
Protein
made of small molecules (long chains) called amino acids
source of energy
involved in all metabolic activities, and are used to generate motion
most complex nutrient
Lipid
Lipids provide a concentrated source of chemical energy for the body
major source of energy
They help in the absorption of vitamins
Water
Water is also necessary to maintain your blood volume, to regulate body temperature, and to keep your skin moist
your body also requires water for chemical reactions, to digest food, and to eliminate waste products
Vitamin
Vitamins regulate cell functions, growth, and development within our bodies
Vitamins are classified as either fat soluble (a, d, e, k) or water soluble
(b and c)
Mineral
Minerals are naturally occurring
elements that the body uses to carry out metabolic processes and to build or repair
