Types of data Flashcards
DIFF BETWEEN QUALTIATIVE/QUANTIATIVE, AND PRIMARY/SECONDARY + EVALUATE THEM!! (14 cards)
What is quantitative data?
Data that focuses on numbers and frequencies that can be outed (eg: questionairres, psycometric tests)
What is qualitative data?
Data that describes meaning and experinces which is expressed in wors (interviews, case studies)
What are some features of quantitative data?
Numerical data (numbers)
statistical analysis (dispersion/central tedency)
closed questions (yes or no, multiple choice)
frequencies (how much it occurs)
What are some features of qualitative data?
Non numerical, descriptive data and can be expressed in words
finding out what ppl think/feel
collected in case studies, unstructured obersvations/interviews
open ended questions
Strenghts of quantitative data?
Easy to anylyse and put on graphs to show comparisons.
statistics are usually less subjective than words and increases reliability
higher internal validity as data is less subjective, so they can be measuring what they wanna measure
Weaknesses of quantitative data?
lacks depth and detail of qulatitative data
learn less about pariticpants thoughts
dosent reflect of compleciities of real world
What are strenghts of qualitative data?
More depth and detail than quantitative data as participants fully express themself
research more insight- higher vailidty
external validity higher as real life insight
Weaknesses of qualitative data?
difficult to anylyse as researher pay have pages to deal with
conclusions are subjective to researcher and can be biased
What is primary data?
qualitative or quantitative
collected first hand by researcher
collected via any research method
original data collected for the specific aim
what is secondary data?
data second hand collected from someone else and ur using it
it alr exists before ur investigation
aka looking in journals books and the web.
what is strenghts of primary data?
suits the aim of the research as researcher knows what data they need
authetntic as comes first hand
source of data is known and credible
weaknesses of primary data
takes more time an effort
costly and time consuming
what are strneghts of secondary data?
easier to acess
less time consuming
data is alr checked before
what are weakness of secondary data?
studies may not fit in with what researcher wants
may be out of date, or of poor wuality- can be a waste of time.
