Types of LTM Flashcards
(3 cards)
Who suggested that the LTM was oversimplified?
Tulving
What are the sections to the LTM?
Tulving argued the model was to simplistic and created more sections:
Declarative:
- Episodic - recall of events in our life; like a diary, time stamped
- Semantic - shared knowledge of the world; like a dictionary, less vulnerable to distortion
Procedural - how to do things; automatic, hard to explain to others
What are the strengths and weaknesses of the types of LTM?
Strengths:
- Case studies support it (HM, CW)
- Neuroimaging supports it (Buckner and Peterson)
Weaknesses:
- Case studies are ungeneralisable and unreplicable (less reliable)
- Neuroimaging is inconsistent; other brain scan studies have shown opposite results to Buckner and Peterson’s trials
