Social impacts of Typhoon Haiyan
6201 people died
1.1 million homes lost - mainly shanty towns
More than 4 million people displaced and even 2 months later thousands were in evacuation centres.

Economic impact from Typhoon Haiyan
Tacloban city was decimated
13 billion dollars in damage
Major sugar and rice producing areas were destroyed - leaving many without jobs.
175k acres of farmland destroyed
Coconut plantation were completely flattened - coconuts were nearly half of the agricultural exports. Philippines is the worlds biggest producers of coconut oils.
Environmental
coastal areas of mangroves were damaged and thousands of trees were uprooted, bad as mangrove is a rare biome with unique and rare species.
Oil and sewage leaked into local ecosystems. Lack of sanitation in days following led to a higher level of pollutions
Individual responses:
Short term:
“Cash for Work” schemes gave locals to clear the debris
Money was donated towards relief effort
Long term:
An increased number of cyclone shelters built further away from coastal areas.
Organisational
Philippines red cross delivered basic food aid
International aid quickly responded quickly with food, water and temporary shelter
The UN donated financial aid, supplies and medical support. However it was far too slow
Oxfam helped finance replacements of fishing boats, leads to economical benefits
Governmental
Short:
declared state of national calamity and asked for international aid for the next day.
UK sent shelter kits to provide emergency shelter for families
sent 475 million dollars as aid
build back better scheme, to build new housing avoiding shanty housing and hurricane resistant housing
