Unit - 1 Flashcards
(33 cards)
What are organisms?
Anything that is alive.
Define homeostasis.
It is keeping the internal enviroment of the cell, within the ranges required for life.
What is cytoplasm?
Its the material inside of all cells that organells float in.
What is a zygote?
Its an egg that is fertilized.
Define metabolism.
Its the sum of all the chemical reactions in an organism.
What is cellure respiration?
Its the metabolic process that releases the chemical energy stored in food.
What are the 3 nonliving levels into which life is organized?
They are atoms, molecules, and organells.
At what level of organization does life begin?
At the cellular level.
What do cells orgainize into?
They orgainize into tissues.
What is a hypothesis?
A hypothesis is an inference that you make before an experiment.
What is the control group?
This is the group that didn’t change in the experiment; the group being compared to.
What is the dependent variable?
This is the variable that changes because the independent variable changes.
What is the independent variable?
This is the variable that you change in the experiment, it varies the dependent variable.
What do tissues organize into?
Hey organize into organs.
What do organs form together?
They form systems.
What do many systems form into?
They form into an entire organism.
What is biology?
It is the study of all living things.
What are organelles?
They are a part of a cell, each does a specific job.
What are cells?
They are a part of a tissue, all cells are seperate into different categories (ie, brain cells).
What is scientific method?
It is the process that people go through in order to form a hypothesis, create a theory, and through experimentation, possibly form a scientific fact.
Define observation?
This is the act of watching something, to see how it acts, or its effects on the enviroment, or a specific subject.
What is the experiment group?
This is the group that is directly manipulated in order to test or see the results of a hypothesis or theory.
What is theory?
This is an educated guess/observation, just before scientific fact.
What is a prediction?
In science this is a guess that holds slightly less merit than a hypothesis, solely because it is an inference made without further education into the subject in question (an uneducated guess).
