Q

What is the energy pyramid?

A

Its the graphical model of energy flow in a community, starting at a producer and working its way up to a third order consumer.

18
Q

What is commensalism?

A

This is a relationship between organisms where one organism is benefitted and the other is not effected.

19
Q

What is mutualism?

A

This is a relationship between organisms, wherein both parties are benefitted.

20
Q

What is reproduction?

A

It is the action of a species multiplying and creating new organisms that are like or similar to each other.

21
Q

What is immigration.

A

It is the action of moving into another area, either by yourself or as a species.

22
Q

What is emigration?

A

It is the action of moving out of a previous location inhabited by the orgabism/species that is moving out.

23
Q

What is primary succession?

A

It is a process where life starts out on a newly created surface, such as an island from a lava flow, from a volcano.

24
Q

What is secondary succession?

A

It is when life starts out in an environment that has been there but was destroyed down to the soil, such as a forest fire.

25
Define population.
This is the number of members in a species in a given area.
26
What is the density dependent factor?
It is the factor that is largely manipulated by a population's density (such as a disease, which would spread quicker in a heavily populated enviroment).
27
What is the density independent factor?
It is a factor that usually will do more damage in a heavily populated area, but the event will come to pass regardless of how high or low a population density is, such as a volcano eruption or a hurricane.
28
What is emigration?
It is the process of one or more members of a species leaving their last "place of residence" for any given reason, whether it was lack of resources or too many predators.
29
What is immigration?
It is the process of one or more members of a species going into a new "place of residence" after emigrating from a different location.
30
Define stability.
It is the process of maintaining a constant regardless of the presence of forces which threaten to disturb it.
31
What is the climax community?
An ecological community in the final stage of succession, in which the species composition remains relatively stable until a disturbance such as a fire occurs.
32
What is the pioneer species?
It is the species that takes over (usually in primary or secondary sucession) and eventually leads to greater biodiversity.
33
Define disturbance.
It is a variable or force that disrupts the integrity or stability of an ecosystem, community, spices, etc.
34
Define inbreeding.
This is the act of breeding two races of the same species, or two different species together in an effort to control the creation of a new or different race of the same species.
35
Define dispersion.
This is an event wherein a species spreads quickly over an area.
36
Define life expectancy.
This the the average life span of a species.
37
Define birth rate.
This the the rate in which new members of a species are born, within a given amount of time (usually annually).
38
What is ecological sucession.
Ecological succession is the observed process of change in the species structure of an ecological community over time.
39
Define growth rate.
This is the rate in which a a species grows within a given period of time.
40
What is the agricultural revolution?
It is the period in which humans evolved to farming and forming plantations to more efficiently grow crops.
41
What is the hunter gather lifestyle.
It is a lifestyle where you live off the land with no form of self sustainability. You hunt animals, and take edible plants nearby, then move to a different location.
42
Define death rate.
This is the rate in which members of a species become deceased in a given period of time (usually annually).
43
What is population density?
It is the number of member of a species within a limited given space.
