The federal government is responsible for all the people in the land
Examples: international trade, immigration and currency

The provincial government is responsible for controlling the people in the province
Examples: education, health care, highways

The municipal government is responsible for only the town or city it is located in
Examples: bylaws such as smoking, parking and noise
