What age is adolescence?
-9 to 18 years
what is puberty?
-a period of rapid growth during which young people reach sexual maturity and become biologically able to reproduce, secondary sexual characteristics develop
what are physical changes a result of?
- hormone activity
- hormones are chemical substances produced in the body which control or regulate body organs
- boys: testes produce testosterone
- girls: ovaries produce oestrogen and progesterone
what is testosterone responsible for?
-produced by the testes and is responsible for a boys voice deepening, stimulates production of sperm, marking the onset of fertility
where does body hair grow in males?
- underarm hair
- pubic hair
- chest hair
- facial hair
secondary sexual organs in males
-penis and accessory glands grow and start to secrete (giving rise to ‘wet dreams’)
secondary sexual organs in females
- uterus, vagina and associated glands enlarge
- menstruation is established
skeleton changes in males
- growth spurt in height and weight
- shoulders widen
- grow taller at a faster rate than before (triggered by testosterone)

-hips widen causing body shape to alter
voice changes in males
-rapid growth of larynx causes voice to change and become deeper in pitch

- start to enlarge becoming glandular after ovulation has started
- fat deposits under the skin and around the breasts leads to a curvaceous shape

- ability to think in concrete ways is extended
- level of complexity of a persons thinking is significantly greater
- able to think about objects and situations they have not directly experienced themselves or that are hypothetical
- for example, contemplating the future or using foresight to predict consequences of their actions
abstract thinking in adolescence
- ability to think using concepts and ideas
- 7 year old child may be able to calculate the time by pushing the fingers of a clock round its face, whereas teenagers can do this calculation in their head
impact of secondary socialisation in adolescence
- develop morals and ideas about what is right and wrong
- question the world around them

- aged 8 to 11
- solve puzzles providing they can see examples of the problem
- may have problems explaining what they mean as heir language skills have not developed

- formulate theories and develop hypotheses
- can use imagination to go beyond boundaries of everyday life, every idea they have is checked then resolved until a conclusion is reached
