Define Empowerment
-Supporting people to take control of their own lives and their future
How can service users be Empowered
- Providing support that is consistent with the service users beliefs, culture and preferences
- Promoting service user dignity
- Promoting independence
- Enabling users to express their needs
What are Rights?
- Entitlements everyone should receive
- Peoples rights are protected by the laws of the UK such as the Human Rights Act (1998) and the Equality Act (2010)
Empowering Children
- Is not the same as adults as the child may not understand what they are being told or what they might be expected to do
- Paediatricians are expected to support young children in understanding their illness and explaining the treatments available through using appropriate language and, if necessary, diagrams
How can a service user’s right to Dignity be supported
-Using a curtain when washing in a hospital
How can the right to Express needs and preferences be supported
-Providing active support to enable choice consistent with individual beliefs, cultures and preferences
How can the right to safety and security be supported
-Changing legislation, banning smoking in public areas

Supporting individuals who need health and social care services to express their needs and preferences
- Confidence/ability to express needs
- May have no confidence due to a speech impediment, embarrassed, feel professional is superior
-Improve this by providing an advocate or family and friends present
What conflict may arise?
-Service users may display challenging behaviour that puts themselves and others at risk
Conflict in Domicilary Care environment
- Scary for service provider
- Service provider is along
- Prevents service user for administering necessary care
- Service user may lie (e.g. claiming the service provider is stealing from them)
Lone work policy
-Protects staff and the service user by giving steps and procedures they must follow when they feel vulnerable
Steps put forward by the Lone Work Policy
- Remain calm, do not raise voice
- Be patient
- Do not become physical violent
- Assess the environment (e.g. remove any potentially dangerous items)
