Unit 1 list 2 experimental design Flashcards
(19 cards)
Claim
state or assert that something is the case, typically without providing evidence or proof.
Constant
occurring continuously over a period of time.
Evidence
the available body of facts or information indicating whether a belief or proposition is true or valid.
Experimental bias
the unintentional influence of the experimenter’s expectations, beliefs, or preconceived notions on the outcome of a study or research experiment.
Experimental control
a scientific test done under controlled conditions, meaning that just one (or a few) factors are changed at a time, while all others are kept constant.
Experimental procedure
the manner in which an experiment is carried out
Hypothesis
a supposition or proposed explanation made on the basis of limited evidence as a starting point for further investigation.
Manipulated variable
is a part of an experiment that you can change to see how other variables respond
Qualitative data
non-numeric information, such as in-depth interview transcripts, diaries, anthropological field notes, answers to open-ended survey questions, audio-visual recordings and images.
Quantitative data
measures of values or counts and are expressed as numbers.
Reason
a cause, explanation, or justification for an action or event.
Responding variable
the factor that is measured by the scientist as a result of the effects of the manipulated variable
Scientific method
a method of procedure that has characterized natural science since the 17th century, consisting in systematic observation, measurement, and experiment, and the formulation, testing, and modification of hypotheses.
Scientific model
a physical and/or mathematical and/or conceptual representation of a system of ideas, events or processes.
Scientific question
a question that is written in a way that is helpful for completing scientific investigations.
Scientific theory
a well-substantiated explanation of some aspect of the natural world, based on a body of facts that have been repeatedly confirmed through observation and experiment.
Trends in data
the general change in a variable with time.
Valid experiment
Valid experiment
a research method that accurately measures the effect of an independent variable on a dependent variable.
