Unit 1 List 2 Experimental Design AKM Flashcards
(18 cards)
Claim
A concluding statement that is used to explain a cause and effect relationship.
Constant
The factors that do not change during the experiment.
Evidence
information collected via rigorous scientific methods that changes their belief in the truth of factual claims of the first to the fourth kind.
Experimental Bias
the unintentional influence of the experimenter’s expectations, beliefs, or preconceived notions on the outcome of a study or research experiment.
Experimental Control
an element that remains unchanged or unaffected by other variables.
Experimental Procedure
the manner in which an experiment is carried out.
Hypothesis
A statement about a specific research question, and it outlines the expected result of the experiment.
Manipulated Variable
a factor that is purposefully and specifically changed by the experimenter
Qualitative Variable
one in which the variable categories are not described as numbers but instead by verbal groupings
Quantitative Variable
any variables where the data represent amounts
Reason
the ability to recognize and understand the scientific method, concepts, processes, and applications used in the pursuit of knowledge
Responding Variable
what the scientist measures as a result of the test variable.
Scientific Method
the process of objectively establishing facts through testing and experimentation
Scientific Model
a physical and/or mathematical and/or conceptual representation of a system of ideas, events or processes.
Scientific Question
one where an investigation can be designed and completed to find out the answer without having to do multiple, entirely different investigations to get there
Scientific Theory
a well-substantiated explanation of some aspect of the natural world, based on a body of facts that have been repeatedly confirmed through observation and experiment
Trends in Data
describes the general direction of change of some variable
Valid Experiment
how well you have controlled your experimental variables in order to maintain a fair test
