Unit 3 List 1 Macromolecules AKM Flashcards
(17 cards)
Macromolecules
a large, complex polymeric molecule formed by the repetitive linking of smaller chemical units called monomers
Organic
any of a large class of chemical compounds
Monomer
a small, basic building block molecule that can bond with other similar molecules to form a larger, more complex molecule called a polymer.
Polymer
a large molecule (macromolecule) composed of repeating structural units or monomers linked by covalent chemical bonds, forming long chains or networks.
Carbohydrates
are a class of naturally occurring compounds
Lipids
compounds that are insoluble in water but are soluble in organic solvents such as ether and chloroform
Fatty acids
the building blocks of the fat in our bodies and in the food we eat
Protein
made up of chemical ‘building blocks’ called amino acids.
Amino acids
molecules that combine to form proteins
Enzymes
a biological catalyst and is almost always a protein
Catalyst
substance that speeds up a chemical reaction
Nucleic acids
large biomolecules that play essential roles in all cells and viruses
Nucleotide
the basic building block of nucleic acids (RNA and DNA
Hormone
Hormones are chemicals that coordinate different functions in your body by carrying messages through your blood to your organs, skin, muscles and other tissues.
Steroids
Any of a group of lipids (fats) that have a certain chemical structure
Dehydration synthesis
a type of chemical reaction in which two smaller molecules are joined together to form a larger molecule following the release of water
Hydrolysis
a chemical reaction in which a chemical compound is broken down by reaction with water
