Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka 1954
a 1954 case in which the Supreme Court ruled that “separate but equal” education for black and white students was unconstitutional.
GI Bill of Rights
name given to the Servicemen’s Readjustment Act, a 1944 law that provided financial and educational benefits for World War II veterans
Suburbs
a residential town or community near a city.
Franchise
a business that bought the right to use a parent company’s name and methods, thus becoming one of a number of similar businesses in various locations
Consumerism
a preoccupation with purchasing material goods
Rustbelt
the area in parts of the NE and Midwest that suffered economically because of rusting factories left behind by declining industries as a large population moved to the Sunbelt states in the 1970s

the “belt” of warm weather states that stretches across the southern third of the U.S. from Florida to California
