Declaration of Independence
The document, written by Thomas Jefferson in 1776, in which the delegates of the Continental Congress declared the colonies’ independence from Britain
Articles of Confederation (First plan of government for the U.S. that failed…)
A document, adopted by the Second Continental Congress in 1777 and finally approved by the states in 1781, that outlined the form of government of the new United States
Northwest Ordinance of 1787
A law that provided the basis for temporary governance as a territory and eventual entry into the United States as states of the territory northwest of the Ohio River.
U.S. Constitution (Second and current plan of government for the U.S.)
The current plan of government for the U.S.- sets forth the nation’s fundamental laws. It establishes the form of the national government and defines the rights and liberties of the American people. It also lists the aims of the government and the methods of achieving them.
