Unit 12.1 Flashcards
(8 cards)
Definition of Natural Selection
When the environment makes one variation more beneficial than another and gives those individuals in the population a higher fitness.
Definition of Genetic Drift
The is random change in the population while natural selection is adaptive change
Definition of Variation
New alleles that come into a population to form species that are slightly different.
Definition of Fitness
Having the right alleles to survive in the wild
Definition of Differential reproduction
The varying reproductive rates of individual or groups within a population, where some are more successful at producing offspring than others.
Definition of Adaptation
When an animal changes its alleles to better fit the environment
What are the five fingers of evolution
Population shrink, non random mating, mutation, movement and adaptations
What is the cause and effect of natural selection vs genetic drift
Natural selection acts on individuals but only population evolve. Natural section also is not random is so some species get better traits and can survive better. Genetic drift is very random and just affects the population unexpectedly which can be good or bad depending on the scenario.
