Unit 12.1 Flashcards
(9 cards)
What is natural selection?
organisms with traits better suited for their environment are more likely to survive and pass those traits on
What is genetic drift?
the change in frequency of an allele/trait due to random chance
What is variation?
differences in alleles/traits in a population
What is fitness?
how reproductively successful an organism is
What is differential reproduction?
not all individuals in a population reproduce equally
What is adaptation?
the process of a species evolving to become fitted to its environment
What are the five fingers of evolution?
1) the population can shrink
2) non-random mating
3) mutations
4) movement (gene flow) - immigration and emigration
5) natural selection (adaptations)
What is the founders effect?
when a small group of similar organisms from a large population split off and form their own population
What is the bottleneck effect?
a drastic reduction in population that causes the gene pool to decrease
