Unit 2 Flashcards
(6 cards)
What are the main functions of water in the body?
Water as a lubricant and cushion, water is the heat sink, water as a solvent.
How do water molecules dissolve in salts?
The opposite charges of water and salt ions are attracted to each other. Water molecules pull the sodium and chloride ions away from the crystal dissolving salt.
Which compartments of your body contains the largest share of water?
The brain and the kidney both hold 80 to 85% of water
What is adhesion?
Water molecules stick to other substances
What is cohesion?
Water molecules stick to each other
Describe the bonding process of the water molecules
Water molecules have two covalent bonds. The Adams repel the bonding pairs downward. Bonding electrons spend more time around the oxygen atom because oxygen is more electronegative than hydrogen. Water has polar covalent bonds. due to the opposite charges, water molecules have an easy time bonding together.
