Unit 2 Flashcards
(7 cards)
What are the three types of biodiversity?
- Ecosystem Diversity: The diversity of habitats an ecosystem has
- Species Diversity: The amount of different species that exist in an ecosystem.
- Gene Diversity: For a given population (group of the same species), how diverse the genepool is.
What are the two types of species diversity?
- Species Richness: How many species
- Species eveness: How even the populations of the species are spread out
Why is biodiversity important?
The amount of diversity in an exosystem allows it to be more resilient to population-disrupting events.
Define:
Bottleneck Event
An event that disrupts an ecosystem by eliminating a large amount of the population
Why are bottleneck events important?
When a population dereases by a lot, so does the biodiversity. Even though the population will increase, the biodiversity is still lower which does makes the environment less resistent.
Define:
Inbreeding Depression
When organisms are reproducing with organisms that are very closely related to each other leading to genetic defects
Phylogenetics
Phylogenetics is the study of the evolutionary relationships between organisms, based on their genetic material revealed through DNA and RNA sequencing.
