Unit 5 Flashcards
(7 cards)
Tragedy of the Commons and Examples
Worldwide, the exploitation of natural resources is good for the short term benefit of some people but detrimental to everyone in the long run.
Ex: Air pollution, fossil fuels, frontier logging, over extraction of resources
Limits to Tragedy of Commons
- Breaking up of commons into private land with different policies
Clearcutting
All the trees in an area are cut at the same time
Edge effect
How the local environment changes along some sort of boundary or edge.
Impacts of Deforestation
- Alllowing runoff into aquatic ecosystems
- Changing local climate patterns
- Decreasing soil fertillity because fof erosion. Forest soil can also dry out
- Degrading habitats and biodiversity loss
- Increasing CO2 because of burning of trees and decay
Steps of Desertification
Animals eat all plant life, rain washes away soil. Water reservoirs dry up, weeds take over. Soil becomes unfit for seed germificiation. Wind blows away topsoil.
Albedo of Zero
Blackbody. 1, emits all light
