illegal to discriminate on the basis of race, religion, sex, etc.
Voting Rights Act of 1965
illegal to discriminate against voters! (increased Black votes)
Women’s Suffrage
- 19th amendment
- NOW (national organization for women) was started to fight for civil right for women
- inspired by Feminin Mystique
Equal Pay
prohibited different wages between men and women performing equal work
Equal Rights Amendment
quality of rights under the law shall not be denied by the U.S./states based on sex; lobbying of conservatives made the vote fall short
Title IX
women would have the same opportunities as men when it came to educational institutions funded by the government
Americans with Disabilities Act
requires employers and public facilities to make reasonable accommodations for the disabled and prohibits discrimination
