Q

what peak is at the far right of a mass spectrum

A

The molecular ion peak, if you add a hydrogen atom to the peak you will get the relative molecular mass of the original molecule

Q

what is the difference between low and high resolution mass spec

A

High resolution records the masses to a higher accuracy, by including more significant figures. Whereas, low resolution mass spectrometry records the mass to the nearest whole number

Q

Describe what happens in a infra-red spectrometer

A

A beam of infra-red light is passed through a sample, the radiation that emerges has some frequencies missing that correspond to the bonds found in the sample. A graph of transmittance against frequency is then plotted.

Q

Define the fingerprint region

A

The area on an infra-red spectrum between 500-1500cm-1 which contains a series of complex vibrations that is unique to each molecule.
