Unit 2: Bones and Muscles Flashcards
(31 cards)
What is the purpose of the bones?
To support the body and protect internal organs from injury (ex. ribs protect the heart and lungs). They are overall what allow us to move and function.
What are the four types of bones?
- long bones
- short bones
- irregular bones
- flat bones
What is ossification?
The process of bone formation. It begins during the eighth week of embryonic development. Mineral matter starts to replace previously formed cartilage, creating bone.
What is the “soft spot” or fontanelle on a baby? Why is it there?
The bone has not yet been formed there, although it will become hardened later. The fontanelle’s give the baby’s head the extra flexibility it needs to squeeze through the narrow birth canal. After birth, they stay open long enough to accommodate the baby’s growing brain.
What is the “growth plate” or epiphysial line on a child?
The area of growing tissue near the ends of the long bones in children and adolescents. Each long bone has at least two growth plates; one at each end. The growth length determines the future length and shape of the mature baby.
