Scientific Method
self correcting process for evaluating ideas with observation and analysis
Theory
explanation using integrated set of principles that organizes observations and predicts behaviors or events
Hypothesis
testable prediction; often implied by theories
Operational Definitions
carefully worded statements of exact procedures used in a research study
Replication
repeating research study using operational definitions to see if findings extend to other circumstances
Case Study
analysis of individuals studied in depth in hopes of revealing universal principles
Naturalistic Observation
observing and recording behavior in naturally occurring situations without manipulating or controlling the situation
Survey
technique for retrieving self reported attitudes or behaviors; usually by questioning a random sample that represents a population
Sampling Bias
flawed sampling process that produces an unrepresentative sample
Population
everyone in a group being studied
Random Sample
sample that fairly represents a population; each member has equal chance of being chosen
