Unit 7 - Module 32 Flashcards
(20 cards)
Frontal Lobes
responsible for working memory processing; left lobe: activated through recalling passwords; right lobe: activated through recalling visuals
Hippocampus
encodes explicit memories; neural center located in the limbus system
Cerebellum
encodes memories that are classically conditioned
Amygdala
brain structure involved in stress response
Long Term Potentiation
neural networks strengthen with repeated stimulation; leads to improved memory
Flashbulb Memories
vivid recall of an event that was emotionally significant
Basal Ganglia
encodes memory for motor movements and skills
Infantile Amnesia
no conscious memories of our first three years
Retrograde Amnesia
forgetting events that occur prior to the injury
Anterograde Amnesia
inability to form new memories after the injury
Prefrontal Cortex
putting things in order (part of frontal lobes)
Stress
short term: helps memories; long term: can damage neurons
Recall
retrieving information that was learned at an earlier time (ex: fill in the blank)
Recognition
identifying previously learned items (ex: multiple choice)
Relearning
learning more quickly the second time
Priming
activation of particular associations in memory
Context Dependent Memory
more likely to remember something if you’re in the same context that you encoded it in
State Dependent Memory
more likely to remember something if you’re in the same state that you encoded it in (ex: drunk or sober)
Mood Congruent Memory
tendency to recall experiences that are consistent with your current good or bad mood; type of state dependent memory
Serial Position Effect
tendency to recall best the last (recency effect) and first (primary effect) items on a list
