What is social stratification?
Includes social inequality and social differentiation
The institutionalized system of social inequality. Refers to a situation in which the divisions and relationships of social inequality have solidified into a system that determines who gets what when and why
What is social inequality?
The unequal distribution of valued resources, rewards, and positions in society
Power
One group gets more than the other
Ex: men get more money than women
What is social differentiation?
Social characteristics used to differentiate people and divide them into different categories
Society tells us that there’s different groups
Ex: men and women
What is an open social stratification?
When there’s mobility
Ex: immigrants work hard and become better
What is a closed social stratification?
When there’s no social mobility
Ex: caste system -> monarchy
What is meritocracy?
A reward system in which an individual’s performance determines where the individual will end up in the hierarchy
If you’re on the top you get more rewards
Is sport a true meritocracy?
Not always
It can be cuz everyone follows the same rules so there’s an equal opportunity to win
What is equality of opportunity?
The chance to participate must be available to everyone. Doesn’t matter the class, gender, race, sex, physical and cognitive ability
What is equality of condition?
Every person taking part in an activity does so under the same conditions
Why is equality of opportunity not always true?
Because not everyone has access to sport
You need time and money
Some people have disabilities
Some sports are for certain classes
Why is equality of condition not always true?
Some people have lower quality equipment
The people with better equipment, better coaches and better facilities will be more successful
It’s the same opportunities but different conditions
What is the social inequality in Canada?
Only 1% of the population stays rich
The top one percent had 14 more income than all Canadians
On average, the top 1% receives 300 000 vs 24 000 for all other Canadians
What is social class?
Divisions in society based on economic and social status
What is the objective aspect of social class?
People in the same class share a similar level of wealth educational achievement, type of job and income
What is the subjective aspect of social class?
Individuals living under similar conditions within the social structure will share a particular, general understanding or who they are and what their life chances are like
What is economic capital?
Economic resource such as money
What is social capital?
Related to social connections, institutionalized networks, group memberships

What is symbolic capital?
Resources available to someone based on the basis of honour, prestige or recognition and represent the value an individual has within a group, institution or society
Ex: Lebron James in basketball (has a lot of capital in sport but not in politics)
What is cultural capital?
Various types of knowledge, cultural goods such as books and paintings as well as formalized accreditations such as a university degree

A number which combines wealth and education
Someone with a high blishen score has a high education and wealth

- Where you are in the social structure determines where you are placed in the sporting level
- Where you are located in the stratification system significantly influences sport participation in general
