Culture
Beliefs, values, practices, behaviors, and technologies shared by a society and passed down to generations
Cultural traits
Material objects and cultural practices shared by a group (Ex: Language, fashion, rituals)
Artifacts
the visible objects and technologies that a culture creates (Ex: Art, clothes, tools)
Sociofacts
structures and organizations that influence social behavior (Ex: Government, schools, family roles)
Mentifacts
the central, enduring elements that reflect its shared ideas, values, knowledge, and beliefs (Ex: Language, religion, morals)
Popular culture
widespread behaviors, beliefs, and practices of ordinary people in society at a given point in time. (Ex: PJ’s at school, one headphone in, entertainment)
Traditional Culture
original behaviors, beliefs, and practices passed down to generations. (Ex: No sex b4 marriage, no tech, men work women clean)
Culture norms
the shared behaviors that guide a society. (Ex: Tipping, school till 18, drinking caffeine in the morning)
Ethnocentrism
The belief that one’s own ethnic group is superior (Ex: Racism, white supremacy, opposite of cultural relativism)
Cultural relativism
Defends the principle that one should not impose one’s values onto others (Ex: Not judging other cultures for their practices, opposite of Ethnocentrism)
Cultural landscape
A natural landscape that has been modified by humans that reflects their cultural beliefs and values (Ex: Statue of Liberty, Vegas)
Ethnic neighborhoods
Cultural landscapes for people outside of their area of origin (Ex: Chinatown, Tehrangeles)
Religion
A system of spiritual beliefs that help form cultural perceptions, attitudes, beliefs, and values (Ex: Catholicism, Judaism, Muslim)
Pilgrimage
A journey to a holy place for spiritual reasons (Ex: Muslims walking around the Kabba)
Toponyms
A place’s name (Ex: United States, California, Narnia)
Gendered spaces
A space designed and deliberately incorporated into the landscape to enforce gender roles (Ex: Gendered bathrooms, locker rooms, sex-separate dorms)
Gender identity
Ones innermost concept of self as man, woman, both, or neither (Ex: Cisgender, transgender, non-binary)
Third place
A communal space that is separate from home (first place) or work (second place) (Ex: Store, restaurant, religious buildings)
Sense of Place
When people fill a geographic location with meaning by connecting memories and feelings to it. (Ex: Pflugerville, Stonehill)
Dialects
A variation of a standard language that is specific to a general area. (Ex: AAVE, Southern-American English, accents)
Placemaking
A community-driven process in which people collaborate to create a place where they can live, work, and learn. (Ex: Building a community garden)
Adherents
The people who are loyal to a belief, religion, or organization (Ex: Loyal Hindus, loyal republicans, loyal environmentalists)
Denomination
Separate organizations that unite in local congregations/religious groups (Ex: Protestantism and Catholicism from Christianity)
Sect
A small group that has separated from an establish denomination (Ex: The Amish, Army Of Mary)
